Northern Ring-necked Snake
Diadophis punctatus edwardsii
IDENTIFICATION
Size: A small sized snake measuring 8.5 to 16.5 inches in
length.
Color: Blackish-gray dorsum with a yellow ring around the neck
and a yellow venter, sometimes with a row of small black
spots running down the center. Smooth unkeeled
scales.
Behavior: Will coil tail exposing yellow venter to ward off predators.
When handled they emit an unpleasant smelling musk.
Very docile when handled, will not bite.
Habitat: Found in a variety of habitats from pristine woodlands to
gardens.
